Drug and Alcohol Misuse

Substance misuse can damage your health, expose you and others around you to harm, and may eventually lead to serious health, social and financial problems.

Understanding the risks associated with drug and alcohol misuse, and knowing how to spot the signs that people might be struggling, is a key part of preventing substance misuse in the workplace.

This course will raise your awareness of substance misuse and its consequences. You’ll learn how to identify signs of misuse, understand its effects on workplace safety and productivity, and find out how to offer support to affected individuals.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand what alcohol misuse is, the typical stages of alcohol consumption, and their associated effects
  • Recognise the risks of alcohol to pregnant people and unborn babies, and identify the positive impacts of reducing alcohol intake
  • Understand what drugs are, how they work, and the risks that prescription drugs can pose
  • Explain the three categories of drugs, the concept of ‘legal highs’, and be aware of the consequences of using and handling drugs
  • Identify signs of substance misuse and understand its impact on the workplace
  • Learn how a drugs and alcohol policy can support employees, and know what actions to take if you’re concerned about a colleague
