Ushering in the future of track measurement with Network Rail – FELIX

To support the launch of FELIX, Network Rail’s new track assessment equipment, Kallidus brought to life a learning experience to drive successful deployment and improved operational efficiency across regions.

The project snapshot

With 20,000 miles of track and thousands of signals, level crossings and stations, FELIX can assess track conditions more effectively and efficiently than ever. But to make this a reality, people needed to understand and know how to use it.

Problem Statement

The Problem

FELIX operates on safety-critical infrastructure, making it essential that learners can use it safely, accurately, and confidently. Its complexity meant it required specialist skills and a multifaceted training approach so learners could carry out accurate measurements, assemble and operate it, and assess and interpret results. Kallidus were challenged to reimagine Network Rail’s existing 5-day face-to-face training into a shorter, effective blended learning experience.

Success Metrics

01

Contextualised: Familiarise learners with FELIX in its real network context, building foundational theory before applying it in face-to-face training.

02

Immersive: Provide an engaging and visual experience to help learners understand how FELIX works.

03

On-demand: Enable easy revisiting of content as a job aid and address knowledge gaps during face-to-face training.

Cybersecurity

Ambitious technology demanded an ambitious learning experience

So how do you prepare learners to safely operate complex equipment like FELIX, covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of its use?

Kallidus partnered with Network Rail to not only map out each task involved in FELIX measurements, but also to understand the importance behind each one. From this, Kallidus provided a detailed eLearning experience complemented by Network Rail’s three-day face-to-face training session. This approach included:

An eLearning Course: A pre-learning experience set the scene for FELIX, introducing the key theory behind its operation, from standards and safety protocols through to assembly and disassembly. 3D modelling then brought FELIX to life, turning complex engineering into something learners could explore, interact with, and understand practically.

Face-to-Face Training: A three-day practical programme delivered by Network Rail put learners directly at the controls of FELIX – assembling, disassembling, calibrating, operating, and transporting it in a real-world setting.

Help Sheets: On-demand practical guides covered these key tasks, delivered in PDF and PowerPoint for easy access, everyday use, and ongoing updates.

Measurable Impact

Outcomes & Insights

After launch, Kallidus worked with Network Rail to measure success and gain insights from the learning experience, examining the true value of the learning against the success metrics, demonstrating how the solution delivered real results.

40 %

Reduction in delivery time

The previous 5-day course was streamlined into a more digestible, learner-friendly 3-day blended experience to maximise engagement and retention.

5

Inspections in 15 minutes

Previously, 1 inspection took an average of 37 minutes; the introduction of the FELIX technology, partnered with this learning experience, significantly decreased the time taken per inspection.

3D modelling + Help sheets

Positive feedback was received for the interactive 3D model of FELIX, allowing learners to get to grips with the machinery, and printable help sheets to view on demand while on shift.

2

National Safety Awards

Kallidus was proud to receive The Rail Industry Association RISE Award and Safety Achievement of the Year at the National Rail Awards.
