As Wales’ largest awarding body, WJEC provides trusted bilingual qualifications, straightforward specialist support, and reliable assessment to schools and colleges across the country. With more than 75 years of experience, they are also among the leading providers in England and Northern Ireland.

The challenge

As a forward-thinking organisation, committed to supporting colleagues’ professional development, WJEC was keen to enhance their offering. With a significant growth in headcount over the last 5 years, they wanted a modern platform that would provide the HR team with automated insight into employee development.

Prior to the introduction of Kallidus, their learning and development were based on assumptions instead of real insights, and lacked valid data that could accurately track employee engagement. Furthermore, as the workforce consisted of many Welsh language speakers, they needed an inclusive, bilingual solution. On top of that, performance management was admin-heavy for Managers and HR, with 400+ folders making it nearly impossible to keep track of reviews and goals.

The solution

WJEC first came across Kallidus through their procurement team, who had heard great things about the platform and knew it had a strong reputation for learning and development solutions.

WJEC implemented Kallidus Learn & Perform to streamline learning initiatives and performance tracking. Kallidus was chosen due to the ability to address several needs, including:

  • Automated tracking: Say goodbye to spreadsheets with everything tracked in one place.
  • Blended learning: A mix of ready-to-go courses and custom content creation.
  • Integrated performance reviews: A structured, data-driven process that works.
  • Manager dashboards: Real-time team insights to drive better conversations.
  • Bilingual support: Training available in both English and Welsh.
  • Easy compliance reporting: Makes audit prep a breeze.

The result

The adoption of Kallidus Learn & Perform resulted in substantial improvements across WJEC’s L&D and performance management processes:

  • Stronger engagement: Employees are more involved in their own learning, and managers are tracking growth more effectively.
  • Less admin: HR and L&D teams have saved hours thanks to streamlined processes.
  • Career Festival success: WJEC launched a tailored development program based on real performance data.
  • Better performance reviews: Moved from yearly reviews to three structured check-ins per year, focused on having meaningful conversations around performance and development
  • Data-led decisions: For the first time, they produced an Annual L&D Report highlighting learning hours, completions, and engagement.
  • Audit-ready: Compliance training is now easy to roll out and track.
  • Great adoption: Staff found the system easy to use, and participation increased.

In 2024 alone, WJEC logged:

  • 3,204 learning hours
  • 3,340 course completions
  • 1,802 additional learning hours

Looking to the future

WJEC views Kallidus as a long-term strategic partner in their L&D journey. Future plans include integrating peer recognition features, expanding the use of feedback tools, and leveraging upcoming skills gap analysis capabilities to further enhance training effectiveness.

By implementing Kallidus Learn & Perform, WJEC transformed its learning and performance management strategy, creating a more efficient, data-driven, and employee-centric approach. The platform has become an integral part of their HR and L&D initiatives, ensuring continuous employee development and organisational growth.
