Who are Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust?

One of the NHS’s highest-performing trusts, Northumbria Healthcare supports over 12,000 staff and is among eight organisations assessed for Advanced Foundation Trust status.

Its strategy focuses on workforce sustainability, digital transformation and continuous improvement, requiring learning systems that enable performance at scale.

The challenge

Learning at Northumbria was constrained by fragmented systems and processes, reactive workload and limited visibility of impact.

Prior to using Kallidus, there were persistent system issues and glitches. As a result, 90% of one L&D specialist’s time was spent resolving issues rather than delivering work which added value to the service.

Compliance performance was also affected, sitting at ~82%, below the 85% target. System errors prevented completion, creating both real and perceived risk.

Critically, governance lacked meaningful insight. Reporting focused on completion metrics, with no clear link to capability, risk or organisational performance.

What changed

Northumbria replaced their existing learning management systems with Kallidus, as a single, reliable platform, shifting learning from activity tracking to outcome-driven performance.

Automated Workforce system integration removed manual data management, while improved system stability significantly reduced support demand.

This released capacity for strategic delivery. The L&D team created 179 digital learning assets in one year, while developing teaching standards, new catalogues and leadership programmes.

Compliance tracking became accurate and consistent, increasing completion rates to 90%+.

With reliable, real-time data, governance shifted from chasing completions to evaluating impact, risk and workforce capability.

  • Significant reduction in support demand
  • 179 digital learning assets delivered in year one
  • Compliance improved from ~82% to 90%+
  • Governance focused on impact, not activity
