eLearning – engage your audience with storytelling

Remember when you were younger and completely immersed in a Disney film? Many films like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King have taught us to be ourselves and to have courage. Maybe you were taught not to judge a book (or a small, green monster) by its cover. Toy Story taught us how vital friendships are.

The fact: storytelling is and has always been one of the best ways to engage your audience.

Storytelling is everywhere

According to Psychology Today, stories have always been a primal form of communication; they are how we think, collaborate, and connect. Stories can be emotional, engaging and explain how things work. Stories trigger our imagination, we become participants in the story, and through the narrative, we can make clear decisions.

Storytelling is a vital part of our every day lives. Have you ever seen an image so powerful that you can relate to it? A picture that evokes pain or beauty – you feel connected. It tells a story. When you think about a fast-food advert – they usually feature a family on a long road trip. Halfway down the motorway, and you see a McDonald’s – hunger strikes! These adverts make you think, they create a story and play on your emotions. Storytelling connects us and engages us.

A common issue with eLearning is its coldness and rigidity; it’s lack of engagement. All too often, employees are disinterested in the training they need to do. Some may even run the risk of not completing online learning because they find it too dull. But who said we couldn’t mix the art of storytelling and eLearning? Children learn so much from storytelling, characters and visualisation in their early years and it not only engages them but also develops their understanding.

Graham Waller, an award-winning Senior Designer at Kallidus, stated the use of storytelling within our Bespoke Content product ensures that learners can be a part of a realistic yet creative story. Using real-life people or avatars, familiar environments and sound, alternative outcomes, and interaction between characters can all bring a dry subject to life. Showing realistic scenarios within a course can help explain and coach how the learner can respond to real-world experiences.
